For most of us, our eyes are the most cherished of our senses, however we tend to forget about the importance of protecting them. Prolonged exposure to sun’s rays can cause serious damage to the eyes and surrounding skin, sometimes leading to vision loss and conditions from cataracts and macular degeneration to eye and eyelid cancers.

So much of our time is spent in front of a computer screen, ipad or mobile device every day as we check our email, catch up on Facebook and read the latest news. However this can result in serious eye strain. If you work with a computer every day, it can result in problems with your eyes.
Studies show that 50 -90% of those who work with computers report eye strain. People report everything from physical fatigue to lower productivity and more errors at work. So how can we deal with this issue?

Fashion trends are famously fleeting, but when it comes to sunglasses and eyeglasses, styles tend to have a bit more staying power.
“Every season there are some things that become more popular,” explains Rozita Taeidi of West Vancouver’s Look Optical. “For example, oversized glasses might become rounder one season, they might become bolder one season, but it doesn’t change too drastically.”
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Look Optical was opened by Rozita’s father, Mike Taeidi, in 1996 at Marine Drive and 15th Street in Ambleside. Mike and his wife are neighbourhood residents and licensed opticians and work at the family-run business with Rozita, who handles the administrative side of things.

In the summer we grab our sunglasses without a second thought to protect our eyes from the sun. With ski season fast approaching and with snow on the way, we need to remember to bring eye protection. With the cloudy, dark days, it’s easy to be fooled into thinking we don’t need our sunglasses, but the overcast skies still let in harmful UV rays that are damaging.
UV radiation leads to harmful problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, periocular skin cancer and macular degeneration.
Before you get your skis ready or strap on those snow shoes to enjoy the beautiful mountains of BC, make sure you are equipped with the right eye protection.
