How to protect your eyes in the winter

In the summer we grab our sunglasses without a second thought to protect our eyes from the sun.  With ski season fast approaching and with snow on the way, we need to remember to bring eye protection.  With the cloudy, dark days, it’s easy to be fooled into thinking we don’t need our sunglasses, but the overcast skies still let in harmful UV rays that are damaging.

UV radiation leads to harmful problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, periocular skin cancer and macular degeneration.

Before you get your skis ready or strap on those snow shoes to enjoy the beautiful mountains of BC, make sure you are equipped with the right eye protection.

Wear UV Protective Sunglasses

In the winter, it’s easy to forget our sunglasses with cloudy days and cold.  The snow reflects almost 80% of UV rays, whether you are skiing or shovelling snow.  Just like your skin, the sun can cause serious problems for your eyes such as snow blindness or pain, as well as long-term damage.  Make sure your sunglasses have UV protection.

When you are in the mountains, the air is thinner, which allows more UV rays to penetrate the atmosphere.  It’s important to wear UV protective goggles when you ski as well.

The cold winds and bright glare can also lead to dry, fatigued and itchy eyes. People who wear contacts are especially prone to experiencing these symptoms in fall and winter. Peri- and post-menopausal women are also more likely to suffer from eye dryness due to the loss of estrogen. Dry eyes, when left untreated, can cause blurry vision and even damage to the cornea.

Shielding your eyes with UV protective sunglasses or goggle helps, as does keeping your eyes moist with eye drops, or even by blinking more often.

Protect yourself

Make sure the entire family limits their exposure to UV rays in the winter.  By wearing protective sunglasses or goggles, limiting your time in the sun, and keeping your eyes moist, you can prevent long-term damage and keep your eyes healthy
